Rules, permits and insurance checklist

Every rule that could apply to your event, as a question to ask the body that decides, with the answer and the date. The rows your setup makes likely are marked.

For a first pass, the rules checklist is essential: every row that applies has an answer and a date, and every other row says "not part of this event". That is the Start here result of Permits and insurance.

Rules checklist

Every row is a question to ask the body that decides, with its answer and the date. Write "not part of this event" in the answer for a row that does not apply.

How to use these sheets

  • Ask the body that decides. The landlord, the venue, the parks department, the city, the fire department, the health department, the state. Write whom you asked.
  • Keep the answer in writing. An email or a page printed with its date. A phone answer gets a note with the name and the date.
  • Mark what does not apply. A row left blank looks like one you forgot.
Fictional example

For the Ortiz party (fictional), the tent row reads: "Asked the fire department about a 20 by 30 foot tent (600 square feet)", with the department's answer and the date. Under the International Fire Code as two fire departments apply it, a tent over 400 square feet needs a permit; Luis's city decides for his yard.

Limits

Every rule this manual names is one place's example. This checklist lists questions; it does not say what applies to your event, and it is not legal advice. The body that decides gives the answer.
